What is acupuncture?

A complete and holistic system of medicine, acupuncture encourages the body’s intelligence to self heal and restore balance.

Acupuncture is based on patterns of energy flow: the vital life force referred to as “Qi”. When the body is in balance, Qi is flowing harmoniously throughout the meridians within the body. Illness and pain arise when the meridians become blocked and Qi is not able to move freely.

The Science & Benefits of Acupuncture

The Science

Acupuncture needles activate specific points on the body that have high concentrations of nerve endings, triggering biochemical and physiological changes in the body.

  • Triggers the release of neurotransmitters such as, norepinephrine, serotonin, dopamine, GABA, and endorphins

  • Ultrasound imaging shows that acupuncture increases blood flow and thus circulation

  • Thermal imaging reveals that acupuncture reduces inflammation

  • Observable changes in the brain are seen with MRI scans

Benefits

Hundreds of clinical studies show that it successfully treats musculoskeletal problems (back + neck pain), migraines/headaches, anxiety, depression, insomnia, infertility, women’s health + more.

  • Restores homeostasis

  • Promotes healing

  • Decreases pain

  • Reduces inflammation

  • Balances body chemistry

  • Resets nervous system

  • Improves circulation

  • Stimulates organ function

WHAT YOU MAY SEE IN OUR CLINIC

Traditional Chinese Medicine Modalities

Acupuncture

Thin needles are inserted into specific acupuncture points in the body. These points are chosen according to your specific diagnosis.

Herbal Therapy

Prescribed to restore energy balance to the opposing forces of energy flow. These are often taken through out the day often in capsule or powdered form.

Cupping

Cupping uses a negative pressure to pull muscle and fascia upwards. This draws toxins to the surface of the skin for the body to eliminate them quickly.

Moxibustion

Ai Ye is an herb used to warm and stimulate acupuncture points through a process called moxibustion. It improves circulation to relieve pain, boosts energy, and is used to warm the uterus to treat some types of infertility.

Gua Sha

Improves local circulation and breaks up scar tissue or adhesions in the muscles and connective tissue. It is also a great adjunctive technique for treating respiratory conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many treatments do I need?

The frequency depends on the individual and how long the issue has been going on for. This is a slower medicine that can take time for your body to heal. Most treatment plans include 1-2 sessions a week for about 6 weeks then your practitioner will re-visit your treatment plan. Acute issues can usually resolve in a couple of treatments, while chronic issues will take longer and may need several months.

Does insurance cover acupuncture?

This is dependent on your individual plan. We recommend checking with your insurance company to see if you are covered for acupuncture, if one of our practitioners is in-network and what specific conditions your insurance company covers.

We unforutnely do not bill out for Aetna, Medicare, MedEx, Masshealth and United regardless of the supplement plan. We can provide you with a receipt that has the necessary coding for you to submit a claim. If you have any questions please feel free to call the front desk at 508-650-1921.

How can I prepare for my first acupuncture session?

We recommend filing out the paperwork beforehand! Please wear comfortable, loose fitting clothes, avoid drinking caffeine a couple of hours before your appointment and please silence your phone so you can reap the benefits to the fullest.

Do I need a health issue to try acupuncture?

No! We work towards creating the healthiest version of you. Oftentimes patients like to come to relax and maintain a strong immune system. Although we’d love to see all of our patients as often as possible, we work towards a maintenance plan of patients coming only 1x a month for a tune up.

Does acupuncture hurt?

No it shouldn’t! Our board certified acupuncturists will talk you through the entire process. Sometimes at the site of the needle you might feel heaviness, a dull achy feeling, tingling, warmth or pressure. These are called “De- qi” sensations and its the feeling of activating Qi at the point.

Is there anything I should avoid after acupuncture?

After your treatment, take it easy. It’s best to avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol + caffeine, and stressful intellectual work for the rest of the day.

What does acupuncture treat?

Everything! Hundreds of clinical studies on the benefits of acupuncture show that it successfully treats conditions ranging from musculoskeletal problems, nausea, migraine headache, anxiety, depression, insomnia, infertility + more!

Is it safe to get acupuncture while pregnant or trying to conceive?

Yes absolutely! Acupuncture has been known to alleviate morning sickness, nausea, constipation, etc., and helps to support the body through the entire process.

Acupuncture is a commonly used fertility treatment for both men and women. It is used to improve egg and sperm quality and fertility treatment outcomes.

Cosmetic Acupuncture is contraindicated for patients who are pregnant or trying to conceive, but traditional body Acupuncture is safe.
