The Magic of Bari Sardo

A Quiet Hillside Above a Silky-Blue Sea

Set just above the coastline, our retreat home is a quiet, elegant hillside refuge — close enough to feel the pull of the sea, yet tucked away in a way that makes everything slow down. Rooms open to warm Mediterranean light, and days begin with gentle, rejuvenating yoga that sets an easy rhythm for the week. You'll receive two deeply restorative acupuncture treatments, woven in at just the right moments.

Meals celebrate unforgettable Sardinian cooking, and one afternoon we step into the kitchen ourselves for a hands-on class rooted in local tradition. From this peaceful base, we move between the silky-blue beaches below and the ancient highlands above, where the Ogliastra shepherd lifestyle reveals the quiet habits behind exceptional Blue Zone longevity.

A single private boat day carries us into hidden coves — with Cala Goloritzé crowned the world's #1 beach by The World's 50 Best Beaches, and Cala dei Gabbiani and Cala Mariolu also ranked among the world's best — rounding out a week that feels understated, nourishing, and quietly transformative.

Your retreat begins with Delta's direct flight from New York (JFK) to Olbia — just over 8 hours in the air — with private transport onward to Bari Sardo, and a welcome dinner waiting when you arrive.

A Blue Zone for Body & Soul

Forty-Five Minutes Inland Lies a Village That Shouldn't Exist by the Numbers We Know

Perdasdefogu, population 1,778, is home to the highest concentration of living centenarians on Earth — Guinness-certified. This is the place researcher Dr. Gianni Pes spent nearly twenty years investigating, confirming centenarian after centenarian against church and civil records, circling each one in blue pen on the village map. That literal circle is where the term "Blue Zone" comes from — later popularized by writer Dan Buettner.

Forty-five minutes inland, past rolling hills and rocky Ogliastra ridges, lies Perdasdefogu, population 1,778 — home to the highest concentration of living centenarians on Earth, Guinness-certified. Here, the Melis family's nine siblings once lived a combined 837 years, a world record of their own.

You'll walk that same countryside to Coili Orrù — Francesca and Massimo Orrù's goat farm — and its shepherd's hut — for a hands-on cheese-making workshop in the shepherds' own ancient method. Share their meal after: warm ricotta, pecorino, honey, bread, and Cannonau wine. Then we'll visit Perdasdefogu village itself — a quiet stroll past the doorsteps of the very centenarians behind these records.

A Sardinian Blue Zone cooking class teaches the logic behind longevity food, not just recipes. You'll learn how simple, traditional dishes built around vegetables, legumes, whole grains, wild herbs, and small amounts of sheep-milk cheese create a naturally anti-inflammatory, nutrient-dense way of eating — and why Sardinians cook slowly, eat together, and use local ingredients like Cannonau grapes, wild rosemary, barley, and fava beans.

THUJune 17
A Boat Day Through the World’s Best Beaches Optional · €150
Breakfast early · full-day boat trip with lunch on board · 7pm Dinner

A full-day boat adventure along the Gulf of Orosei — and the chance to set foot on the beach the world just named the best on Earth. In 2025, Cala Goloritzé was voted the #1 beach in the world by The World’s 50 Best Beaches, which praised its raw, untouched beauty and the serious conservation efforts that protect it. We’ll also take in Cala dei Gabbiani (#3 in Europe) and Cala Mariolu, honored globally in the “Best of the Best” category.

Includes a professional skipper and guide, lunch on board, an aperitif and afternoon snack, umbrella service for beach stops, and boats equipped with shaded areas, solariums, and freshwater showers. Turquoise lagoons, pink-white pebble beaches, and hidden pools reachable only by boat — consistently the highlight of the retreat.

Grape harvest at a Cannonau vineyard

Ogliastra's Cannonau wine carries ten times higher antioxidant properties than other wines, and here it's not just a drink but a cultural and social ritual — high in polyphenols linked to cardiovascular health, embodying the sun, sea, effort, and tradition of the territory. Our visit pairs a walk through the vines with a guided tasting of two or three wines alongside local pecorino and cured meats.

Frequently Asked Questions

Good to Know

How do I get to Bari Sardo?

Galanias Hotel sits roughly halfway between Sardinia's two main airports — Cagliari and Olbia. Fly into Olbia if you can — Delta runs a direct JFK (New York) route. Our private transport will meet you at the airport on June 13th and return you on June 19th, included in your retreat rate.

Flying a different airline into Olbia?
Time your flight — or plan an overnight stay — to catch our June 13th transport.

Spending extra time in Italy?
Fly into Rome and connect with a short domestic flight, or take the overnight ferry from Civitavecchia to Cagliari or Olbia.

What should I pack?

Bari Sardo is a relaxed coastal and hillside setting — light, breathable clothing, swimwear, and comfortable walking shoes for the shepherd hike and village strolls. Bring a layer for boat days and evenings, and a reusable water bottle.

Do I need to be an expert at yoga?

No — all levels are welcome. Jennifer Harvey has taught yoga for decades and leads our more advanced sessions; Po Harvey D'Arcy works with beginners using chairs and props, so everyone practices at their own pace.

Do I need expensive yoga clothes?

Wear whatever feels comfortable. Casual, relaxed, and authentically you is perfect — no special yoga brand required.

Do I have to be vegan or vegetarian?

Not at all. Our four-star hotel uses exceptional ingredients, blending traditional Bari Sardo and Ogliastra cuisine with modern Italian touches. Most dietary needs can be accommodated.

Is tipping expected in Sardinia?

Unlike some destinations, restaurant bills in Italy don't typically include a large automatic service charge. Rounding up or leaving a small amount (roughly 5–10%) for exceptional service is appreciated but not obligatory.

Do I need a visa?

US citizens do not need a visa for short tourist stays in Italy (part of the Schengen Area) under current rules. You'll need a valid US passport with at least six months of validity remaining. Requirements can change, so it's worth checking official guidance closer to your travel date.

Note: Europe's new ETIAS travel authorization is expected to become mandatory for US travelers sometime in 2027 — possibly before this retreat. It's a quick, inexpensive online application (similar to an ESTA), and we'll send guests the details as the requirement date is confirmed.

Is it okay to travel solo?

Absolutely — the retreat is designed to welcome solo travelers, couples, and friends alike. Daily group activities (yoga, meals, the shepherd day, the boat trip) make it easy to connect with fellow guests.

Do I need travel insurance?

Strongly recommended for all our retreats. Look for a policy that covers trip cancellation, medical emergencies, emergency evacuation, and adventure activities such as boating or hiking.
